How Should I Clean Pigeon Feces From My Attic?
Pigeons are descendants of the Rick Dove, a species of bird that was domesticated by humans to be a source of food. The population of pigeons can boom quickly in cities because they reproduce quickly and have no natural predators. They also prefer living near human settlements as they are not afraid of humans like many other woodland birds. That is why flocks of pigeons can soon become a nuisance in urban areas. Another problem is the huge amount of pigeon droppings that ruin the look of benches, parks, fountains, walls, roofs and even your attic!
So if pigeons have unfortunately been nesting in your attic, and now you want to clean it up, continue reading, and we'll tell you how.
Cleaning small amounts of pigeon dropping:
If the droppings have not piled up, they may be easily removed with a scraper. Just grab a scraper, something like the ones used for wall putty, and scrape the solid gunk away. Afterward, if you want, you can disinfect the area by applying a disinfectant, but if it is an outdoor area, you don't have to. The sun's Ultraviolet rays are natural disinfectants. If you are cleaning pigeon gunk from plants, then do not apply bleach as you risk killing them. Use an organic disinfectant instead.
Cleaning large amounts of pigeon dropping:
First make a disinfectant solution, by mixing 1 part bleach to ten parts water. Pour this sodium hypochlorite solution over the entire area to kill the germs, and let it soak. If the gunk has been piled up very thick, you may need to do this a few times to thoroughly soften the gunk for easy removal. If it dries in under 10 minutes, then soak it again. After 15 mins, grab a powerhouse and spray the entire area. The gunk will wash off easily. Alternatively, you can scrape it off, and mop the remainder. Scrub the area afterward with dishwashing soap and a scrubber, to get rid of the dirt in cracks and crevices.
Cleaning pigeon gunk from your attic:
If pigeons have been nesting in your attic, you'll need to be extremely careful in cleaning it. First, open all windows and switch on fans, to bring in the fresh air, as breathing in the contaminated air can give you an infection. Do not touch any dead birds with your bare hands- use disposable gloves, tie them in a plastic bag and throw them in the trash. Use the scraping method instead of water to clean the floor. Also, disinfectant the area afterward with bleach to kill the germs completely. Air out the area afterward.
What you should wear when cleaning pigeon gunk:
Always wear long sleeved clothes, full trousers, disposable gloves and a dust mask when cleaning pigeon droppings.
